The room began to lighten, and Gage pulled Chantal closer to his side. He’d soon be back on duty and didn’t want to stay past sunrise. Gage was in for a long day without barely any sleep. He’d kept to his multiple-orgasm promise, and now Chantal slept soundly in his arms. Leaving their delicate cocoon meant facing the reality that soon they’d go their separate ways. And he didn’t want to leave her while Rajin was still on the run.

Stirring and stretching, Chantal shot him a satisfied smile, and his heart clenched with unnamed emotion. “Morning, honey.”

“Is it? It’s still dark.”

Gage reluctantly forced out the words. “It is, and pouring with rain. I have to leave soon.”

“Five more minutes.” Her kiss to his chest had him remaining in place. “You didn’t sleep much—I mean when we weren’t—”

“I checked my phone earlier. A message came through from Martin with an attachment.”

Chantal raised her head.

“We’re getting closer to a name. Shit. How do I say this?” Ignoring her frown, Gage let go and sat up. “Your father was in Sri Lanka during the civil war. He spent a great deal of time in Colombo, and that was the last place he’d visited before he died.”

“No. Daddy never mentioned Sri Lanka.” Chantal rose to face him. “We always spoke about the places he’d visited when he returned from his travels. He’d tell me about the people he’d met—his adventures.” A crease formed between her brows. “Before he died, he told me he went to France. He even spoke about visiting a stable and seeing a show jumping horse for me.”

“He wasn’t in France. Unfortunately, we’ve linked his movements to a number of war-torn regions. Your father may have operated as a war dog investor—providing illegal weapons through a dummy corporation. Martin found photographic evidence from an archive holding online. And Chants, there’s a photo that you’ll need to see—of your father in Colombo with a group of mercenaries.” Gage reached over for his phone and clicked on the downloaded image before handing the device to Chantal.

Her breath caught as she looked at a group of men gathered in a tea field. Some carried weapons. “The monster who strangled me—he’s in that photo.” Fear flashed over her now pale face. “With my father. He spoke the truth—he knew my father.”

“Now, we have a lead. We’ll run a facial recognition search.” Gage gently took the phone from her shaking hands. “You’re safe. We’ll find him.”

“My father lied to me. About where and who he was.”

“I think the assassination is linked to your attack. The pieces aren’t fitting together. Not yet, but I’ll get names and untangle this mess.”

“Why you? It’s not your job to investigate my father’s death or my assault. I don’t understand.”

“I care about what happens to you. And you deserve the truth.”

“My father was a good man.”

“I’ve never said otherwise.”

“He was… wasn’t he?” Her eyes begged for reassurance and Gage’s heart broke. He knew that feeling—realizing that your father wasn’t a swashbuckling hero.
